Afternoon Tea in Edinburgh for Hen Parties
Afternoon tea is the civilised heart of a hen weekend: cake stands, fizz, and a couple of hours to sit down before the night ramps up. Edinburgh has everything from grand hotel spreads to a tea bus that tours the sights, so pick the tone your group is after. Book ahead either way, because the good ones fill up and most cap tables at around ten.
The grand splurges
- The Balmoral's Palm Court is the classic: a glass-domed room, a live harpist and tea poured tableside. Premium, and worth it for a special hen.
- The Signet Library's Colonnades serves tea under the columns of a restored Georgian law library. Possibly the most photogenic room in the city.
- Prestonfield House is a baroque mansion with peacocks in the garden and a gothic tea house, a theatrical day out near Arthur's Seat.
- Gleneagles Townhouse does a stylish tea in a glamorous former banking hall on St Andrew Square.
Grand but gentler on the budget
- The Dome on George Street serves tea under a soaring dome in a former bank: the grand look without the top-end price. Tables cap around ten, so a big hen splits across a couple.
- Harvey Nichols' Forth Floor pairs tea with panoramic skyline views and is genuinely good value.
The quirky and the fun
- The Red Bus Bistro serves afternoon tea aboard a vintage 1966 Routemaster while it tours the sights, which doubles as a sightseeing hen activity.
- The Witchery by the Castle does a gothic, candlelit tea with haggis savouries right by the Castle. One heads-up: it does not serve afternoon tea in July or August, so it is off the menu for summer hens.
- Mimi's Bakehouse is the relaxed, generous, unfussy local option for a laid-back group.
Booking tips
- Book well ahead, three months for the Signet Library and the top hotels.
- Most tables cap around ten, so call to arrange a large hen.
- Ask about a champagne upgrade if you want to make it feel like an occasion.
