Ceilidh Nights in Edinburgh: A Scottish Twist for Your Hen or Stag Do
A ceilidh is a traditional Scottish dance, a live band, a caller who shouts the steps, and a room full of people spinning each other around and getting it hilariously wrong. It is the great equaliser: nobody knows what they are doing, so everybody has a go. For a hen or stag group it is honestly one of the best nights you can have in Edinburgh, and there are two ways to do it.
Public ceilidh nights you can just join
Turn up, buy a ticket, dance. The caller teaches every dance, so complete beginners are welcome.
- The Burly Ceilidh Club at Ghillie Dhu, in a converted church by the West End, runs a regular night with a dinner option or door-only entry later on. It is very group-friendly.
- The Edinburgh Ceilidh Club holds a weekly Tuesday night at Summerhall plus a monthly Friday at Assembly Roxy, with the caller teaching as you go.
- Edinburgh Open House Ceilidhs are the casual, cheap monthly option with a live band and caller, and they welcome singles, couples and groups alike.
Private hire: your own ceilidh
For a big group, hiring a space and filling it with just your party is the move.
- Ghillie Dhu and Assembly Roxy both do private ceilidh hire.
- The Caves, a set of atmospheric stone vaults under the Old Town, is a stunning private space that seats around 250. Note it is hire-only, not a regular public night, so you bring the band.
- For a private night you can also hire a ceilidh band and pair them with a venue, which we can help arrange.
Why it works for a group
It gets everyone involved, it is properly Scottish, and it is a brilliant icebreaker early in the weekend before the night out. If you like the Scottish angle, our mini highland games is the daytime version of the same energy.
